2016 Viacha Councilwoman Car Crash
On February 2, 2016, Herminia Mamani, the municipal councilwoman of Viacha was ran over by an unknown perpetrator. Mamani sustained several injuries in the accident which led to her being hospitalized in the Corea de El Alto Hospital (“Muere La Concejala de Viacha Que Denunció ‘Acoso Político’ - Diario Pagina Siete” 2016). While at the hospital she spoke in interviews wherein she claimed that the perpetrator responsible for the accident was Rubén Chambi, the then deputy, and that the attack was politically motivated (“Atropellan a concejala de Viacha, ella ve acoso político” 2016). While hospitalized, Mamani developed a pulmonary infection which led to her being transferred to Metodista de La Paz due to the fragility of her condition (“Muere La Concejala de Viacha Que Denunció ‘Acoso Político’ - Diario Pagina Siete” 2016). Mamani died on June 24, 2016 (“Muere La Concejala de Viacha Que Denunció ‘Acoso Político’ - Diario Pagina Siete” 2016).
Following her death, a document filed by councilwoman Cecilia Chacón, repudiated the lack of action taken by judicial and municipal authorities in addressing the political harassment Mamani endured at the hands of the suspended deputy, Rubén Chambi Mollericona (“Concejo Municipal exige investigar muerte de Herminia Mamani” 2016). No further action was taken to address the vehicular assault of Mamani.
