Laymi-Qaqachaka 1998
e1802 Laymi-Qaqachaka 1998: On January 16, Qaqachakas engaged looting houses in Pata-pata attacked and killed the Laymi campesino Faustino Cala Chucutea. Following this event, Jukumanis, Chayantakas, and Panakachis all entered into a mutual defense alliance with the Laymis against the Qaqachakas [Presencia (1998d)].On the 25th of January, the Laymis sought revenge, killing Qaqachaka campesinos Vicente Copatita Ayca and Lucrecia Chaisiri Montaño. On February 15, Laymis killed three more Qaqachaka women, Bertha Colque Porco, Elvira Colque de Condori, and Francisca Condori Huaycaraya. A tentative peace agreement was reached on February 19 [Presencia (1998a); @MasMuertesEntre1998]. Early in the morning of April 18, 1998, a group of Qaqachakas attacked a group of Jukumani campesinos at a place called Taki Palka. Corpus Pacheco Ossio, 60, from Chiruya was shot and killed. Severino Condori Achacata, 26, and Alberto Acero Bernabé, 25, both from Coya Cachi, were also shot and killed. Melquiades Condori Chocata, 24, from Chiruyo, was injured in the arm. The Jukumanis told police that the Qaqachakas had been stealing their crops recently so they went to Taki Palka in hopes of surprising them. However, the Qaqachakas were armed and started firing at them. Police were dispatched to the conflict zone. A high level commission made plans to visit the area in the near future due to the high number of confrontations involving as many as ten different ayllus in the north of Potosí and southeast of Oruro [Presencia (1998b)]. On April 24, a group of 400 Qaqachakas attacked the Jukumanis using firearms in Pairumani, Potosí [Presencia (1998a)]. Two Jukamanis, Primitiva López Chino and Margarita Warawara Rojas, were killed and three injured
[Presencia (1998e)]. On May 26, The ayllus all signed a preliminary peace agreement in Huanuni, but two days after, Laymis from Pata Pata, Sora Sora, and Cututo in the Bustillo province of Potosí fired upon Qaqachaka shepards and sheep from Quachapi, Ch’allacunca, and Uritaca of Avaroa,Oruro causing the death of two sheep. Later that day, Jucumanis from the Yareta Ch’utu community in Bustillo, Potosí, launched an armed attack on Villa Belén. In response, Qaqachakas from Challacunca and Coachapi attacked Pata Pata and Cututo on May 30th, killing the Laymis Pedro Calla Sillero and Paulina Chocotea Condori
[Presencia (1998c)]. On August 8, Qaqachakas killed Laymi campesino Adrián Condori, 50, in Pata Pata Grande. He died as a result of a gunshot. His son, Alberto Condori, 18, was shot in the knee as well. This violence persists in spite government attempts at pacification through increasing public investment and the implementation of social and development projects [Agencia de Noticias Fides (1998)].
